The Biggest Social Media Updates Coming In 2024

The world of social media is ever-changing. From new formats to new names (*cough* X *cough*), there’s always a new update to integrate into your brand’s social media strategy.

Keeping up with the latest innovations can be tricky, especially if you’re already juggling content creation, posting schedules, and interacting with your audience. But don’t worry! We’re here to help you launch your 2024 social media strategy with a bang.

Scroll down for the biggest social media updates in 2024 all marketers should know.

Pssst… Bookmark this page so you don’t lose these tips!

1. Instagram continues testing Feed Notes

Instagram’s Notes feature has been around since December 2022, and the brand is still fine-tuning the feature. These post-it note-like text bubbles allow you to share quick thoughts and emojis with your audience. Think of them like old MSN Messenger statuses.

The upcoming Instagram Notes update will allow you to add Notes to any post in your feed for up to three days. This is still in the testing process, but it’s expected to drop in early 2024.

Why does it benefit marketers? Feed Notes will be a great way to connect with your audience and promote products. However, these will only be seen by followers who you follow back. Perhaps best for small businesses!

2. Threads launches in Europe

Yes, we’ve had threats in the US and UK since July 2023. But its European launch is something to be excited about! In late December, Threads opened its doors to 448 million EU users and allowed users without profiles to browse the app — something not previously allowed.

While Threads is a new concept and not as embraced as Instagram or Facebook, brands are slowly increasing their social media strategy to include posts on the platform.

Why does it benefit marketers? A larger audience and more visibility! Admittedly, this expansion only matters if you target EU-based users. However, all traffic is good traffic.

3. TikTok tests a Creator Centre UI

Fed up with navigating TikTok content via an app? It looks like a desktop creator tool will arrive in 2024. This interface is set to provide more analytic insights, AI tools, and new discovery tools. Ideal if boosting short-form video content is on your New Year’s content spreadsheet.

The desktop UI will include full-screen displays, easy-to-read data, and ways to research your content’s performance. However, there’s no date of arrival yet. So, fingers crossed it pops up soon.

Why does it benefit marketers? Managing your TikTok presence via desktop will make life easier, especially if you also manage Instagram, Facebook, and other channels via desktop.

Other Social Media Updates To Watch Out For In 2024

Can’t get enough of social media updates? Here are some additional updates to look out for:

  • TikTok Shop seller fees raised from 2 to 6% — Something to note if you use TikTok Shop for your business.
  • X (formerly Twitter) hosts over 750,000 jobs on the app’s own job portal — Looking for staff or interns? X might be better than LinkedIn for your next hire.
  • Instagram releases Add Yours templates — You can now create your own Add Yours Stories template, perfect for branded content.
  • X (formerly Twitter) brings back link preview headlines — Notable for businesses that post links on the platform.
